Sector 8: Food, Water & Environment

The Food, Water & Environment Sector focuses on the reality that we are undergoing the “Sixth Great Extinction,” due to massive Earth Changes of both cyclical and man-made origins. As a result, thought-leaders in this Sector research and introduce novel approaches to preserving our natural resources: potable water, oceans and rivers, forests and wetlands, and the wildlife that lives in each of these interdependent eco-systems. This Sector also promotes appropriate production of food sources, including the latest research on organic farming, permaculture, and ethical livestock management.

Building a Nonviolent Direct Action Campaign

Are you feeling the urgency of climate chaos and ready to move beyond pleading with elected officials who are in the pockets of the fossil fuel industry? Well, is subsidizing a special opportunity for you to learn about nonviolent direct action, or make your campaign more strategic if you are already using this approach.

During our four classes together online, you will learn how to:

* Choose a demand that’s ambitious but winnable.

* Identify your target and where they are vulnerable.

* Develop creative tactics to make your actions effective, press-worthy, and fun.

* Escalate over time in a way that builds pressure and your power.

In this class, you will find support and a chance to strengthen your courage and leadership muscles. Each session will include a mixture of lesson and discussion. Recordings of the class sessions will be available in case you can’t make every one, along with additional materials and suggested homework.

The next round of this course will begin October 23 and meet four Mondays, ending November 13. It meets from 7:00-9:00 pm EST.

The regular price for this course is $129 each, but is generously subsidizing its members, so you have access to a very special rate of $49 for an individual, or $129 for a group of five or more!!

No one turned away for lack of funds – contact if you need additional financial support to participate.

Oct 17, 2017 to Oct 19, 2017 Gardening & Homesteading Skills Summit

Do you love the satisfying feeling of feeding your family directly from your own home garden?

Knowing your meal was cultivated by your very own hands... sourcing and saving seeds, building up fertile soil and capturing rainwater to nourish your produce?

Or maybe you wish you could grow your own food? You have the heart, mind and will, but just need some easy-to-follow guidance...

You can! And we’ll help you develop the skills you need — with expert tips, step-by-step techniques, and urban farming best practices to get you started.

If you’re already an avid gardener... why not try adding chickens into the mix? (Imagine having fresh eggs every day!) We’ll show you what you need to know — from building coops to feeding your hens to collecting eggs.

Or maybe your next step is beekeeping? (Does it get any better than raw, organic honey for everything from smoothies to salves?!)

Whether this is a new interest for you or you’ve been at it for years, if you’re passionate about living in the healthiest, most sustainable way possible — for yourself, your family, and our planet — you’ll discover essential, environmentally friendly practices for protecting our planet’s precious resources while providing for your family, community and beyond.

During The Gardening & Homesteading Skills Summit, October 17-19, 2017, you’ll hear from an incredible lineup of today’s most innovative farmers, master gardeners, homesteaders and off-the-gridders, who’ll redefine backyard farming and share the exact skills you need to live in more sustainable ways, and with greater self-reliance.

You’ll receive tips and life hacks for starting or expanding your home garden, seed saving, soil enrichment, rainwater harvesting, small animal husbandry, beekeeping, making your own cheese and more!

Join a global community of people who want to grow more, shop less, and save the planet... an emerging, multi-generational movement to return to home gardens and revive practical skills to live healthfully, happily, and holistically!

Sep 11, 2017 to Sep 21, 2017 11 Days of Global Unity

When you get right down to it, as a human race we have what it takes to transform our world. We have the will, the intelligence, the resources, the heart and the leaders to address and heal the areas of our planet that need it most...

There are brilliant changemakers all over the globe making meaningful progress on critical issues — the environment, health, human rights, women’s issues, economic justice and peace, to name a few.

So what’s keeping us from achieving global transformation?

The fragmentation of changemakers around the world — like environmentalists, human rights advocates and healthcare workers, each working in their own silos.

We’re being called to work in collaboration and partnership like never before, to create the comprehensive changes we need... for a world that works for all.

The 11 Days of Global Unity summit, taking place September 11-21, bridges these gaps by connecting and promoting agents for change who are working within each of the identified “themes” — such as Environment, Health, Human Rights and Peace — to create a comprehensive blueprint for global transformation.

11 Days of Global Unity, produced by The Shift Network in partnership with We, The World, has become a worldwide platform, linking changemakers and their awareness and action campaigns to an inspiring global movement for the promotion of peace, justice, sustainability and transformation.
